Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese word that translates as "God Light Energy". The easiest way to understand its true meaning is to split the word in two. Rei is directly translated as God or light. It is used to describe the whole of creation - every cell, blade of grass, stone, tree, animal, human, every planet and star. It goes further to describe the creative mind of God. An accurate interpretation of the word Rei could be "All That Is", both in thought and form.

Ki is the name given to the vital energy that is used to animate and give life to this creation. Just as a model car requires batteries to make it move, so the complex creation of the universe requires a form of energy to animate it. This energy, also known as chi or prana, can be viewed as an ocean that surrounds the physical universe. It provides us with the vitality we require to maintain our health, balance, and well being on all levels-physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

Ki can normally be seen with the naked eye, and appears as dancing electrons of light that move rapidly around. There is an abundance of this energy in nature, and it is most clearly visible in mountainous areas, at the ocean's edge or in dense forests. Most forms of martial arts, in particular Ki Gong and Tai Chi, acknowledge the presence of this energy and focus on redistributing ki throughout the body to increase health, balance, and well being.

Reiki is a system of healing that has been developed to bring us directly into contact with the creative intelligence and the vital energy of the universe. This is achieved through a transmission intended to clear us from emotional issues, belief systems, and physical disorders that no longer serve us. The practitioner is not doing anything “magic”. They are working as a sort of jumper cable to connect you to the universal energy. As our energy clears, our awareness grows.

Reiki is performed fully clothed. You will be asked if you have a particular area of focus and the asked to relax either seated or lying down. The intention will be set by the practitioner and hands will be placed at various parts of the body to channel the energy. Most people experience warmth or a tingle or vibration from the hands. Some feel nothing from the hands. Almost everyone experiences a sense of relaxation and inner peace.

The peace and relaxation is so great that some people fall asleep. When they apologize for not being awake through the session, I let them in on a little story. In my volunteer work with cancer patients I’ve had the opportunity to work with people that, because of their medication, had been unable to sleep for a week. Within minutes of being on the table they fall asleep. To them this was the best thing they could have asked for. To me it was a great compliment. I encourage you to allow yourself to go where your body takes you. We’ll bring you back at the end of the session.

Reiki is a way of bringing us back home, of re-connecting with the essence of who we are. Reiki is a way to remove the veil that prevents us from experiencing the union with the universe. As we begin to wake up to this idea and walk its path the veil becomes thinner and thinner. We begin to see that it was our fears and beliefs in limitation that created the veil in the first place. So Reiki is a doorway that can re-connect us to the very place we came from. Reiki is a doorway home.
